AI is everywhere, it’s in our phones, on our devices and woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. But, our expectations of AI are often unrealistic with many professionals thinking it can ‘do it all’. That’s not quite the case…yet and we’re still a little way away from superintelligent AI or ‘Artificial General Intelligence’ having full autonomy over whole jobs.

Think about when you last asked AI to help you complete a task, was the answer perfectly usable? or did you have to tweak, edit and verify the information in its output?

If your answer is the latter, let’s get into why this is the case.

Treat AI like a Junior Intern

AI is still like a junior intern. It’s helpful and eager to learn but still requires constant guidance and oversight to stay on track.

What happens when you give a junior intern a task without clear instructions?

The work produced is misdirected, incomplete or doesn’t quite meet expectations.

With AI, the reason behind this is because it’s still learning. AI is still learning how to multitask, it’s still learning how to reason and it’s still trying to make sense of human intent and ‘common’ sense. It therefore acts like an intellectual being, who was born yesterday.

So, when you’re thinking about how you can use AI and what tasks it can handle, consider the tasks you would give a junior intern first. The tasks you aren’t over-reliant on because you know you’ll need to double check the output and you never expect too much too soon.

How to ‘Manage’ AI

Communicating effectively will help you to overcome the limitations of AI and improve the output generated in whichever platform you choose to use.

Give clear, concise instructions: give instructions as if your ‘junior intern’ is blindfolded and needs step by step guidance. Outline how you want it to complete a task and what steps it needs to take to produce the output you need.

Double check its work: Verify all citations, sources and claims to ensure they are valid and from a reliable source. This means checking all AI generated articles, summaries and content before using it in client work or marketing.

Provide feedback: If your AI does not produce the result you need, give it direct feedback. Try refining the instructions written in your prompt, adding more detail or changing the instructions completely to produce a better output.

Round Up

The value of artificial intelligence increases when you use it as a tool to amplify your work, not replace your judgement. Embracing AI as a junior intern, instead of seeing it as an all knowing expert will set you up for making smarter, more sustainable decisions, leveraging its strengths. By managing AI thoughtfully, you can combine your human expertise with AI’s capabilities, allowing it to grow with your company.

Start exploring use cases and tools on Property AI Tools and think about the repetitive, time consuming tasks that you can hand off to your junior employee..
