What is Prompt Engineering?
Prompt engineering is a field that’s shaping how generative AI (GenAI) interacts with us. Prompt Engineering is, in a nutshell, the act of writing text instructions. The instructions guide the AI model to complete a specified task and produce useful responses in a specified format. Text Prompts can be used to generate outputs in text, image, audio and even video format depending on the LLM platform you’re using. Through prompt engineering, you fine-tune the input to get the best possible output from AI, making it an invaluable tool for professionals seeking efficiency and precision for daily tasks.
Applications in Real Estate
Here are some scenarios where prompting can make a difference:
Generating Property Descriptions: Crafting detailed, engaging property descriptions with just a few carefully phrased prompts.
Creating a Chatbot: Chatbots, when guided by well-engineered prompts, can handle inquiries, schedule viewings, and provide instant responses to common questions.
Deal Analysis: A well-structured prompt can analyse all the particulars and data points within a property portfolio, providing you with fast and speedy insights into current performance, returns and areas for improvement.
By embracing prompt engineering, you can offer faster and more precise services to your clients, upskill your team and improve consistency of output across the business. Not only will this help to keep your messaging on brand, but your correspondence, tone of voice and graphic design too.
How to Write a Basic Prompt
When it comes to AI systems, the quality of input directly impacts the quality of output. Well-structured prompts form precise instructions that will in turn deliver top-notch responses. Similar to when asking a friend for information: the clearer your question, the more accurate the answer will be. Here are a few different types of prompts you may use on a regular basis:The same principle applies to prompting
Question Prompt
This type of prompt is when you ask the AI model a direct question. No additional parameters are needed, you simply ask a question, give some context and receive an answer.
Prompt Example
“What is the impact of AI on the real estate market in the USA?”
Task Focussed
This is when you ask the AI model to perform a specific task using natural language, as if you were speaking to a person. You may give context and outline steps the model needs to take to create your desired output.
Prompt Example
“Write a 100-word Linkedin post about home buying tips. Include a strong opening statement to engage my audience, 5 points of advice for homebuyers and a call to action to connect so they can see the latest property listings from my agency. Use a friendly, formal tone and close with relevant hashtags”
Output Example
“Dream Home, Real Soon? 🏡
Thinking of taking the plunge into homeownership? Here are 5 tips to guide your journey:

How to Write an Advanced Prompt
This type of prompt is more commonly used to instruct an AI assistant (Chatbot). Remember to use simple, direct language for the best results.
RISEN Framework
R – Role: Tell the AI what perspective you want it to answer from E.g. Act as a professional Data Analyst
I – Instructions: Tell the model what task you want it to complete e.g. provide a detailed analysis and insights of property portfolios.
S – Steps: Give more context and break down your instructions into manageable steps for the model to follow e.g. Start off with providing a financial summary, then provide 3 recommendations to improve the portfolios profitability.
E – End Goal: Give a clear end goal, provide context of your audience e.g. the goal is to assist property investors with analysing new portfolio acquisitions.
N – Narrowing: Include parameters that you would like the model to operate within e.g. give clear actionable insights and avoid complex technical jargon.
Final Prompt Example
“Act as a professional Data Analyst, provide a detailed analysis and insights of property portfolios. Start off with providing a financial summary, then provide 3 recommendations to improve the portfolios profitability. The goal is to assist property investors with analysing new portfolio acquisitions.”
Iterative Testing and Improvement
Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is the perfect AI prompt. Testing and refining prompts is a continuous process. What works today, might need adjusting tomorrow as market conditions, data sources or client needs change.
Test Variants: Create multiple versions of a prompt and see which yields the best results. Test each version of the prompt on different LLMs such as ChatGPT, Anthropic and Gemini. This process helps in understanding which elements work and which need adjustment.
Evaluate Feedback: Use AI responses to gauge effectiveness. Are you receiving the kind of detailed insights that benefit your real estate tasks? Add further constraints to fine-tune and improve your prompt
Make Adjustments: Based on testing and user feedback, refine your prompts. This might mean tweaking wording or providing additional context for a better output.
By embracing an iterative approach, you ensure your prompts evolve with the changing demands of the real estate industry, keeping your AI tools sharp and current.
Conclusion
By refining the way you write prompts, you improve the output of GenAI tools, transforming them into powerful assistants in your day-to-day operations.
Before you dive in, consider the various applications in your workflow and think about how mastering this skill can save you time, increase accuracy, and enhance client satisfaction. Are your prompts effective enough for your whole team to use?
